I remember the first story I write. When I was around 14 the first time I really got into writing really heavily. My first story was about a cursed console, and well it wasn’t the best as I went a few chapters in and quit. And I happened to have lost that work. Not that I was ever planning on reviving it.
My second work would be an incredibly normal fantasy. It still had a lot of things wrong with it. Although I had an idea for a dystopian then, but I never got past the second chapter. And it was a really good thing I never did, the idea was not dystopian in any way and the story from the beginning was a hot mess.
You will start off somewhere on the wrong foot, but that’s a learning journey.
It took me six novels to finally finish a manuscript. And an edit for me to figure out where I was going wrong. It is a process of learning, and I would not regret spending the time writing those works. I had to have a lot of failures before I could really have gotten much better in writing.
No amount of advice of lesson would have taught me that.
Writing isn’t a race to see who gets to the finish line first. I used to think I needed to get published as soon as possible. But really I should not have thought so, otherwise, I may have had an embarrassment of a book to my name. Now that I’m in my final year of adolescence, I still realize that writing isn’t really a competition to see who gets there first.
Writing is a process
No one should tell you that after a certain amount of time, publishing becomes impossible. It isn’t a benchmark to suggest that you have a future as a writer, it is a milestone of a writer. If you’re writing, you are a writer.
So for all people who are just starting out on your first work, don’t worry about whether it is good enough yet. You just need to finish it and then you can start figuring it out. It took a while for me, but it was important that I did that. If not I won’t be the writer I am today.
