Have a book is near completion and yet feel ambivalent about the story you have written down? In a way where you’re thinking that it’s not good enough, or it’s not ready to be in bookstores yet?
Consider me, as someone who critiques your story and makes suggestions on how to fix it. I would analyze your characters, pacing, plot, and themes. To see if the work is of good quality and if the story measures up when scrutinized, whether it is tight, does what it sets out to do and is a delight to read from the get-go.
But wait, what makes me qualified or good enough to tell if whether your story is good or not?
I’m a writer, and also a reader who has read well over 800 books in a wide variety of genres. Exciting me is rather difficult, and if a story is weak, I can often tell the reason.
But, isn’t writing subjective?
Yes, but what I’ll do is make suggestions after reading your work and trying to keep all biases aside. Meaning I’ll look at your work as a critic and objectively view your story for what it is. I would make annotations and notes before I write a detailed report to you, and keep in mind that these are all suggestions, the story is yours and I would never attempt to change your words or even rewrite them.
Then, what about the technical aspects of writing?
There are plenty of editors and proofreaders who do that. I don’t offer the full package because I’m not trained in grammar or knowing down to the line whether the sentence is strong or not. I don’t pay much attention to the writing unless it impairs my ability to understand your story.
You can also think of this as a stepping stone as you must do a lot to please me as a reader. I’ll aim to be encouraging, unbiased but I won’t ever be lenient on the work. I’m mostly unsatisfied by what I read, with only a handful being exceptional gems which changed my life. Thus, I strive to make sure your story is the best it can be, not because I like to tear things apart and nitpick them brutally. Because I want to see more great works and to enjoy reading.
